La battaglia sta per iniziare, come ogni anno. Il Toronto International Film Festival – in programma dal 5 al 15 settembre – darà, nuovamente, del filo da torcere alla Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica di Venezia, che si terrà dal 29 agosto al 7 settembre. Se al Lido l’apertura è affidata a “Gravity” di Alfonso Cuaron, con George Clooney e Sandra Bullock, il festival canadese inaugurerà con “The Fifth Estate”, l'atteso film sul fondatore di WikiLeaks, Julian Assange, che sarà interpretato da Benedict Cumberbatch,e  si chiuderà con “Life of crime”, di Daniel Scheter. Altra première molto attesa è quella di “12 Years a Slave”, storia di schiavitù diretta da Steve McQueen, con Michael Fassbender e Brad Pitt e anche “Don Jon”,di e con Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Non poteva mancare “Rush” di Ron Howard, la storia leggendaria del duello tra Niki Lauda e James Hunt del 1976. Il Festival renderà anche omaggio a Cory Monteith, star di "Glee" scomparsa pochi giorni fa, con la proiezione di due suoi film in anteprima.

Gli italiani presenti in Canada sono: Daniele Luchetti e il suo “Anni Felici”; Gianni Amelio con “L'Intrepido” e Paolo Sorrentino, che porterà  “La Grande Bellezza” anche in America. Non mancano anche quei film che dovevano sbarcare al Lido e che alla fine hanno scelto Toronto come vetrina internazionale. Parliamo di: “Devil’s Knot” di Atom Egoyan, con Colin Firth; “Third Person” di Paul Haggis; “August: Osage County” di John Wells, con Meryl Streep e Julia Roberts e “You Are Here” di Matthew Weiner con Jack Black, Matt Dillon e Renée Zellweger.
